A LIFELINE day care centre for the elderly has been officially signed over to its dedicated members.
The fate of the Gainsborough Avenue Day Centre in Whiteleas hung in the balance when South Tyneside Council re-evaluated how the centre should be run, and it almost closed.
However, its members were given the opportunity to run the centre themselves, independently from the local authority. They accepted, and a committee was formed.
Now, after running the centre for more than a year during a probationary period, the council has officially signed over the management of the centre to residents.
