Dana Corp. CEO Southwood J. Morcott holds a degree of celebrity few of his peers can match. A neighbor at his Hilton Head, SC, vacation home is best-selling novelist John Jakes, who in a recent book, "California Gold," assigned to one of his characters Morcott's classic, Southern first name. But in selecting a sobriquet for the character, rather than using "Woody," the name by which Morcott is commonly known, Jakes chose "Swifty." "I've never quite understood why," the chief executive says, shaking his head.
Creative license aside, perhaps Jakes was considering Morcott's stewardship of Dana, an automotive components manufacturer based in Toledo, OH. Sales jumped 15 ...
