TRANSPORT campaigners today warned the [pounds sterling]180m second Tyne Tunnel will not drive escalating traffic congestion off the roads.
The warning comes in the light of the Newbury Bypass development, which sparked much higher than expected traffic levels.
Officials of the Tyne Crossings Alliance, which is fighting plans to create a new road link between Jarrow and East Howdon, say the Newbury Bypass proves that new roads do not solve traffic congestion.
Alliance officials claim the Newbury scheme, launched exactly 10 years ago, shows road building cannot solve the region's transport problems.
