A SOUTH Tyneside green campaigner today tried to block plans for the [pounds sterling]180m second Tyne Tunnel scheme in a legal challenge at the High Court in London.
Bryan Atkinson is bidding to prove that the environmental statement submitted as part of the new Tyne crossing scheme is flawed.
He is challenging Transport Secretary Alistair Darling over plans to create a new road link between Jarrow and East Howdon.
The Government officially backed the tunnel scheme last summer, but Mr Atkinson, a 42-year-old family man from South Shields, is asking the country's most senior judges to reject the controversial subterranean road link.
