A NEW association is being formed this weekend to safeguard the future of South Shields riverside.

People living in and around Green's Place, on the town's Lawe Top, successfully fought a campaign earlier this year against a controversial housing development on the riverside.

There was outrage at an application to convert the site of the existing Saft Battery factory in River Drive into a 229 flats complex, incorporating two huge circular rotundas.

The plan was labelled a "blot on the landscape" and an action group was formed to fight it.

And the opponents were celebrating in April when the planning application was rejected.
