A JARROW-born writer and adventurer who helped thousands of people to beat the demon drink has died.
Bill Linskey, 85, helped establish the Alcoholics Anonymous network more than half a century ago.
Mr Linskey, who stowed away in a ship at the age of 17 and later took part in the Arctic convoys during the Second World War, wrote about his experiences in the book No Longer Required.
His cousin, Margaret Lagan, of Primrose Terrace, Jarrow, said: "He was a man who must have helped thousands of people beat alcoholism over the years.
