By design, the Tampa Bay Rays position B.J. Upton in shallow centerfield and dare opposing batters to punch holes in his defense.
It is a calculated gamble - one the speedy Upton rarely loses, whether a ball looks ready to drop in front of him, soar over his head or skip into the gaps.
The Yankees' Alex Rodriguez thought he had beaten Upton on Tuesday night with a blast to the deepest part of Tropicana Field. Instead, Upton added to his library of highlight films with a balletic catch over his shoulder while using the wall as a runway to pivot back toward the field.
