Jul. 3--Cirrus Design Corp. will produce part of an unmanned aircraft that would be used by the U.S. military for surveillance.
The work done by Cirrus, which involves building the airframe and fuselage of the aircraft, will mean $4 million worth of business for the Duluth aviation company.
Alliant Techsystems of Hopkins, Minn., is the main contractor for the two-year, $53 million project. Cirrus was chosen by Alliant as a subcontractor because it has the ability to do structural design work on the aircraft and operates with fewer overhead costs, said Dale Klapmeier, Cirrus' executive vice president.
