I've learned over the years that you begin to notice differences in towing performance in 500-pound increments, especially when you're towing more than about 60 percent of the maximum rating. We recently received a Ford Explorer XLT four-door 4x4 with a 4.0 V-6, automatic transmission, 3.73:1 axle ratio and the towing package. The Explorer will be used as a project vehicle for the next couple of years to test a variety of products, and one of the first projects on our schedule was to tow three different boats weighing from 2000 pounds up to our Explorer's maximum tow rating of 5100 pounds.
