SHEFFIELD'S industrial past has left the city with twice the amount of lead in its soil than in rural areas, a new survey has found.
Every square kilometre across the city contains 20 tonnes of lead, while other areas were found to be polluted by chromium and nickel, both a legacy of the steel industry.
The investigation by the British Geological Survey is the most detailed of any city in the country.
The study collected 569 soil samples from a range of different sites right across Sheffield.
Soil pollution was found to be especially severe in some former industrial areas in the north east of the city. But 35 hotspots were also ...
