ALLOTMENT holders who keep chickens may have to sign a register, under plans to combat an outbreak of bird flu in Barnsley.
Council chiefs are examining measures adopted in Rotherham which require anyone who keeps poultry, or breeds small numbers of game birds for shooting, to register.
The government has a Poultry Register which commercial farmers with 50 or more birds must sign.
Health chiefs predict one in four of Barnsley's population could be bedridden, and 250 could die, if a bird flu pandemic sweeps the borough.
Victims would typically be laid up for a week. A second wave could hit a few months later, with more chaos.
