Trying to explain to the rest of the world what the West Midlands means is a challenge - not least because there is no agreement in the region itself.
The West Midlands county was created in 1974, covering Birmingham, Solihull, Wolverhampton and Coventry, as well as the Dudley, Walsall and Sandwell in the Black Country.
But the county council was abolished in 1986, leaving seven unitary authorities.
