WASHINGTON - The Federal Trade Commission has been convinced: A new stretchy fiber, developed by a Japanese manufacturer, is different enough from spandex that it deserves to be called something else.
The FTC, which holds sway over what apparel fibers should be generically called, hasn't decided on a name for the material, used in such garments as swimsuits and cycling shorts. Its manufacturer, Teijin Limited, has suggested the generic designation could be polyetherester, elastoester or estelast. Teijin now sells the fiber under its trade name Rexe. A generic name is needed in order to identify the fiber in the content label legally required for every garment.
