Introduction

Growers in the Loess Plateau usually apply excessive fertiliser as insurance so that N will not limit yields. Fertiliser use increased until the 1990s in the Loess Plateau, and has been maintained since then at annual levels of approximately 150 kg N and 30 kg P/ha for dryland winter wheat (Wang 2006). High N application rates will be one of the reasons for increased crop yield. However, these fertiliser application rates are not necessarily sound from the environmental perspective.
