TAXPAYERS are shelling out pounds 630,000 a year to give the only woman patient at Carstairs State Hospital a ward to herself.
The huge sum would pay for more than 100 NHS hip replacement operations.
The woman is being held at the secure mental hospital in Lanarkshire while bosses try to find a more suitable place to house her.
Officials want to close the ward where she is living but have been forced to keep it open until she can be moved to another hospital.
