BOSTON -- Topiramate is an effective, well-tolerated, and "generally safe" treatment for migraine prophylaxis in adolescents. The novel antiepileptic agent has shown promise for pediatric migraine prophylaxis in small studies.
For the study, adolescents between 12 and 17 years old with a minimum 6-month history of migraine were randomized to one of three regimens for 16 weeks: 50 mg daily of topiramate (35 patients), 100 mg daily of topiramate (35 patients), or placebo (33 patients), Dr. Donald Lewis said at the annual meeting of the American Headache Society.
