When the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences was founded in 1879, the very first exhibits were formed through a combination of the state geologist's mineral collection and the displays of the commissioner of agriculture. Both men saw the state's natural resources as key in recovering from the economic devastation of the Civil War. The mineral wealth of the state had long been recognized, even by General Sherman's Union soldiers, who had looted the state geologist's display cases while occupying the state capitol.
