LONDONDERRY, Northern Ireland - When I was a boy, my grandmother used to entertain me with stories of her Anglo-Norman ancestors, some of whom eventually settled in Oregon. That piqued my interest in genealogy, although my skeptical mother cautioned me not to look too closely at family history as "you'll probably find horse thieves."
I did not come across any horse thieves, but I did find a number of intriguing characters with checkered histories. One of them was a certain Sir William Cockayne, lord mayor of London under King James I at the beginning of the 17th century.
