Japans top mobile operator NTT DoCoMo Inc. said Thursday it was buying part of an Irish company focused on communications at sea, as it increasingly looks abroad to expand and find a competitive edge.
NTT DoCoMo said it would acquire an 11.5 percent stake in Irelands Blue Ocean Wireless for $10 million.
The Irish firms shareholders already include the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, which is affiliated with NTT DoCoMo.
Blue Ocean Wireless operates base stations and other infrastructure that allows people on merchant ships make telephone calls and send text messages while on the high seas.
