AKST State officials expect a flood of requests for a renewable energy program that will award $100 million in grants starting this winter.
The number of applications from groups wanting to build wind mills, tidal turbines, geothermal plants and other projects will be overwhelming because the energy situation has reached crisis proportions in much of Alaska, said Karsten Rodvik, a spokesman with the Alaska Energy Authority.
Alaska has experienced a wake-up call in the last year or so with the escalating costs of diesel, particularly in rural Alaska, he said.
