Relationships between social groups - defined by ethnicity, gender, and social status - and measure of students' learning environments and school-related outcomes were examined by the present author in two earlier studies (Marjoribanks, 1991, 1995), using the same sample of research participants. The results of the first study indicated that family environment, cognitive performance, and attitudes toward school varied significantly across social groups, for 11-year-old Australian children.
