The Vineyard is a beehive of activity this week as folks prepare for the annual Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass & Bluefish Derby. This year's five-week-long installment - the 63rd consecutive - kicks off at midnight Sunday and comes on the heels of one of the more memorable derbies.
Last year, a record 3,039 anglers participated with a whopping 3,099 total fish caught - a 35 percent increase from 2006, according to officials. Among the lucky winners was longtime derby enthusiast and island resident, Helena Kirschenbaum, who won the All-Tackle Boat Bluefish with a 14.57-pound blue.
