MONTVALE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 11, 1996--In response to President Clinton's objective of reducing tobacco use by young people, The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (NYSE:GAP) announced today that it will eliminate all cigarette vending machines from its retail stores by the end of this month.

"We recognize that by removing cigarette vending machines in our stores we will greatly limit access by minors to tobacco products," said James Wood, chairman and chief executive officer of A&P. "We are in full support of President Clinton's effort to reduce the use of tobacco among young people."
