WHAT DO THE TOOTH fairy and Christian stewardship have in common? Inflation. The former has profited from it but the latter gets shortchanged. Chicago Tribune columnist Eric Zorn drew on the U.S. Department of Labor's Consumer Price Index to see if the tooth fairy is giving more or less these days, in constant dollars. Zorn had heard parents muse about the fact that when they were young, 30 or so years ago, they had to be satisfied with two bits from the mysterious night visitor who left filthy lucre under their pillow in exchange for a tooth. Now their children get a whole dollar. What is the world coming to?
