Jul. 16--A west Eugene sports products distributor is hoping for a home run as he branches into manufacturing, creating what will be Lane County's first baseball cap factory.

Kelly Richardson, president of Richardson Sports, has applied to the city to build a 12,000-square-foot factory and warehouse for cap making at 3490 W. 1st Ave.

Compared to the high-tech firms that are setting up shop in Lane County, Richardson's venture is definitely in the minor leagues. He says he'll initially hire only about a half-dozen production workers. But if he's able to lure enough orders, he hopes employment will grow to 20 or so.
