HIV-positive patients are more enthusiastic about protease inhibitors than health care professionals are, according to a survey of 409 participants in a recent symposium discussing this new class of drugs. That enthusiasm concerns clinicians who have seen the toxic side effects from these drugs without assurance that the drugs are improving their patients' survival.
More than one out of three (39%) HIV patients expressed unqualified excitement about protease inhibitors, compared to about one in five (21%) health care professionals. Most health care workers reported they were "cautiously optimistic" about the effectiveness of the drugs.
