Our many able American news correspondents in Moscow have amply reported the antics of the demagogue Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who vaulted into the front ranks of Russian politics by imitating - almost caricaturing - Adolf Hitler; but the correspondents have done rather less well at reporting the reasons for the rise of a Russian Hitler. The authors of this book, a husband-wife emigre team in New York, have produced a detailed and fascinating biography of Zhirinovsky, but they, too, could have provided a fuller account of the roots of his support.
The correspondents can hardly be blamed for reflecting our government's and our public's preoccupation with perestroika and ...
