A 1994 survey of Baroque music raises expectations and invites comparison. During the past decades musicological research has grown by leaps and bounds, and new, historiographic approaches have been introduced. Two recent historic studies shun the use of the term "Baroque" as a historic-descriptive category altogether and limit the scope of their inquiry to the seventeenth century. Nicholas Anderson's Baroque Music, in contrast, follows the well-trodden path of the past, as indicated by title and subtitle.
