INTRODUCTION

This paper takes up topics raised in or suggested by my book, Composition with Pitch-Classes: A Theory of Compositional Design.(1) The book is addressed to experienced composers who are interested in using pitch-class relations to make cogent, rich, and sophisticated music. It is neither a textbook nor an introduction to posttonal composition, although it can be and has been used in pedagogical settings. Since I try to meet the needs of many different kinds of composers, I do not discuss musical style, purpose, or occasion at any great length.
