The early historical development of the Hungarian people unfortunately cannot be documented accurately: evidence is controversial. Linguistic research has suggested that Hungarian ethnicity can be traced back to about 3500 B.C., when the Ugric branch separated from the mainstream Finno-Ugric peoples.
