NEW YORK _ The first time Chris Cooper heard John Sayles discuss ``Lone Star'' was over dinner in Sayles' upstate New York house. Cooper and his wife, Marianne Leone, had become close friends with the filmmaker and his longtime producer, Maggie Renzi, in 1985, when Sayles cast the then-unknown as a union leader in his coal-strike drama, ``Matewan.''
