A study that was published in the June 2008 issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry sought to determine the long-term effects of foster care on the physical and mental health of adults who had lived in private or public foster care systems. The study looked at 479 foster care alumni who had been placed in either a private or public foster care program in Oregon and Washington as adolescents (14-18 years old) some time between 1989 and 1998.
Twenty-three percent (111) of the study participants had been placed in the Casey program, a private foster care agency that is largely supported by Jim Casey (founder of United Parcel Service). The Casey program differed ...
