Michigan was one of the beneficiaries of an "alphabet soup" of federal relief programs during the Great Depression of the 1930s and early '40s. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's "New Deal" administration created a number of programs that gave jobs to the unemployed while creating long-term benefits to the nation. This year marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of the beginning of the New Deal. During the course of its eight-year existence, one of the most productive programs, the Works Progress Administration (WPA), and its subgroups employed over 8.5 million people.
