THE BIGGEST AND BESTperforming funds are featured in these rankings. To be included, a U.S.-stock fund must have a one-year record and usually at least $2.9 billion in assets. International-stock funds (see page 60) must usually have at least $1.6 billion in assets. Smaller funds are included if they appear in any of the preceding articles.
Key benchmarks are at the bottom of each page. Among them: Standard & Poor's 500-stock index, a measure of large U.S. companies; the Russell 2000, which tracks small-company stocks; and, in the section on foreign-stock funds, the MSCI EAFE index, which tracks stocks in developed markets.
