While there are many Americans represented in intellectual history, Henry Adams stands head and shoulders above the rest. Any study of the nineteenth century is incomplete without considering Henry Adams, and now any study of Henry Adams will be incomplete without considering Edward Chalfant's definitive biography. Better in Darkness is the second volume in this trilogy.
