Scholarly interest in the Ford administration has grown since the opening of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library in 1981, but until now no single work has offered a comprehensive appraisal of the Ford presidency. Greene's book fills this rather large gap in the literature by going beyond the simplistic image of Ford as caretaker president and "healer" of the nation. Greene tells "a story of an administration struggling to create itself . . ." (xii).
