With an area of 488,100 sq km, Turkmenistan has huge natural resources, including the world's third or fourth reserves of gas and considerable oil - with gas exports planned to rise from 60 BCM/y in 2007 to 125 BCM/y by 2015. There is a wide range of minerals to produce chemicals. The world's third largest deposits of sulphur are found in the Kara Kum desert, a land mass covering about 80% of the country. There are deposits of potassium, chloride, sodium sulphate salt and other minerals.
