Turkey has re-emerged as a stable power at the edge of Europe and Asia after months of struggle between a powerful and mainly urban segment of society which upholds a secular ideology established by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk upon the collapse of the Ottoman empire following World War-1 and the ruling Islamist AKP whose opponents suspect of trying to revive the Sunni caliphate. This ideology is known as Kemalism (see news1-TurkeyAzerIranJuly1-08).
