The commander of the US forces in Iraq until Sept. 16, Army Lt Gen David Petraeus, told the BBC on Sept. 12 he will not declare victory in this country because the calm is fragile and violence could resume at any time. To take over as head of the US Central Command (CentCom) which is in charge of the Middle East, Central Asia including Afghanistan and Pakistan, and the Horn of Africa, Petraeus said he will keep a special focus on Iraq in his new position - although the US is shifting its emphasis to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
