Jul. 23--The local brewpub scene is taking on a harder edge.
In recent months, four Eugene brewpubs have obtained licenses from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission to serve hard alcohol. State law barred brewpubs from pouring anything but beer or wine until 1993.
Although few of the local brewpubs admit it, the rush to add hard liquor service may be a direct competitive response to the Wild Duck Brewery on 6th Avenue, which opened with a full bar in February.
"We decided to (serve hard alcohol) because we wanted to offer something for everyone," Wild Duck co-owner Pat McCallum said. "Our strategy is to attract a larger segment of the market."
