College football will finally join the 20th Century in 1999.
Years of picking a champion based on polls will change with Tuesday's announcement of a new super alliance and national title game each New Year's weekend beginning Jan. 1, 1999. The participants include ABC, the five conferences in the current bowl alliance, the Pac-10, Big 10, the Rose Bowl and three other bowls to be determined.
The new format will advance the champions from the Pac-10, Big Ten, Big 12, Atlantic Coast, Big East and Southeastern, to the alliance bowl field. Notre Dame, the nation's only major independent, will qualify if it meets pre-determined record and ranking standards. An ...
