Yelps of pain from the bowels of Birmingham Council House as arms are twisted and backbones stiffened.

A softening-up exercise to make the stroppier members of the city planning committee see reason over an application to build a 35-storey tower in Colmore Row must, presumably, have succeeded.

Most members dismissed the scheme as totally unacceptable in July. But the matter will be reconsidered on Thursday.
