Jul. 24--Joseph F. Hladky Jr., The Gazette Co. chairman who for years played a principal role in Cedar Rapids' leadership structure, died Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. He was 85.
Private family services were held Wednesday.
Hladky was associated with the Cedar Rapids Gazette for 60 of its 113 years. He was regarded as a leader in Iowa journalism circles and a pioneer in development of television in Cedar Rapids. While he began his newspaper career in advertising, he became a strong advocate of the news operation.
