ATLANTA _ A dozen years ago Carl Lewis heard boos in a U.S. stadium when he won the long jump. Monday night he heard only cheers.
It's a shame it took us so long to wise up.
The Olympics are 100 years old and Lewis cemented his position as the greatest athlete in their history Monday. In what could be his final Olympic performance, Lewis won his ninth Olympic gold medal by winning the long jump for the fourth time, leaping 27 feet, 10 and 3/4 inches.
Lewis ran through his first attempt, then leaped into second place with his second jump. His third leap passed everyone by about a foot, and he fell flat on his face with a mixture of joy and relief. After ...
