STERLING - Nestle Waters North America has hired a nonprofit river study group to collect data on the impact of withdrawing water from the Clinton-owned Wekepeke watershed in Sterling, but not in anticipation of a new plan to sell Wekepeke water.

Piotr Parasiewicz of the Amherst-based Rushing Rivers Institute said yesterday the institute is doing a pilot project for Nestle to use in countering widespread opposition it faces in nearly every community it approaches about bottling spring water.

He said the research should take 18 months, and not all of it will be conducted at the 564-acre Wekepeke reservation.
