DENVER - Cable's vulnerability to direct-broadcast satellite will escalate this year, a consultant and executives from DBS companies said at a conference here two weeks ago.
Speaking at Global DBS Summit '96, Carl Vogel, president of EchoStar Communications Corp.'s Dish Network, said the upstart company had signed 70,000 subscribers in the three months since launching - the fastest that any DBS service has reached that level.
Vogel credited EchoStar's new promotion of a $199 satellite dish in exchange for a $300 upfront payment for an annual programming package with adding 10 percent to subscriber numbers, which are running as high as 1,500 a day, he said.
