Development of the No. 11 shaft at Anglo American's Vaal Reefs mine in South Africa is aimed at opening up the Moab section of the property, which lies to the south of the Vaal River. Essential to the mine's future if declining reserves in the current North Lease area are to be replaced, Moab may come into limited production later this year, a year earlier than expected and significantly under budget. Vaal Reefs hoisted and treated over 8.5 Mt of ore last year, producing 66,172 kg of gold at a recovery of 3.5 g/t.
