In late 1989, the waning days of the former Soviet Union, Ellen Mickiewicz and I conducted one of that country's earliest national in-person opinion surveys. Our article (Finifter and Mickiewicz 1992) reported our findings on attitudes toward political change and support for individual versus state responsibility for the social welfare of the citizenry. Among these were the following:
1. Compared to the less well educated, better-educated respondents were more likely to support political change but slightly less likely to support individual responsibility for social welfare, i.e., education was positively related to support for political change ([tau.sub.b] = .17) ...
