Commissioned in 1869 by King Leopold II to protect Belgian interests in the Congo, the Brabant of the title is one of the last wooden frigates. Outflanked by the steel and steam of the British navy in 1894, it has survived some real sea changes, from navy training ship to floating casino. Now a mostly docked hotel and restaurant, it is in the full trim of a sidewalk cafe, with boxes of geraniums and potted plants all around, and brandishes a white flag with a crossed knife and fork.
