Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System laid off between 35 and 45 employees during the past week.
The layoffs are mostly in clerical and support positions, said Bon Secours spokeswoman Lynne Zultanky. The hospital system still is actively recruiting and hiring nurses and primary care physicians, she said.
The Bon Secours system employs about 4,000 people in Hampton Roads .
Zultanky said Bon Secours has fallen short of its financial goals and is realigning its staff to best meet the needs of patients.
